Report
5.5 miles starting at The Wagon Horses.
Fourteen walkers met on a grey damp overcast day-but we weren’t down hearted!!
We walked along mostly lanes as conditions in fields /paths underfoot were very muddy and wet so our route was changed.
Our walk took us through the village of Bodden founded in 1541 by Earl Michael Bodden
Notable residents include Trish Bodden (1753-1777) who disguised herself as a man to fight in the American War of Independence and Amrose Bowden, the first English colonist to settle in Maine.
We passed St Aldhelm’s Well in Doulting an ancient spring which is the source of the River Sheppey.
The well was named after St Aldhelm after he died in Doulting village in 709.
We passed Doulting Quarry famous for providing stone for Glastononbury Abbey/ Guildford Cathedral/Wells Cathedral and the M5.
Rather damp and cold we retired for lunch at the pub being joined by 3 non-walkers for what what had been a very enjoyable morning.
