Winter Warmer: Wells to Pilton and Glastonbury

Despite the early drizzle, eleven riders departed from Lidl, suitably wrapped to brave the weather, and with the promise of later sun.

We travelled a well-known route along the Strawberry Line, and then via North Wooton ascending to Pilton for coffee and cake at The New Rooms. We were joined here by Graham, swelling our number to 12 for the ride onward through Pylle, a stiff climb up to East Pennard, and then westwards, gradually downhill and across the levels to Glastonbury, by which time the sun had made a welcome if belated arrival.

The Middlewick Farm Café provided a fine lunch, fueling us for the return to Wells. With both our intended route and the reserve flooded, we had to resort to a brief section of busy A39, before quieter roads again, past Fenny Castle. With various riders peeling off homeward, just five returned eventually to Wells, but all seemed to have enjoyed the opportunity for a mostly dry December outing of around 27 miles.
