Wells Walk from Golf Club

Wednesday 8th November – Wells

Walk Co-ordinators: Stan & Bleddyn

A 5.5 mile walk from Wells Golf Club. We will walk to Cathedral Green via Tor Lane and moat side of Bishops Palace, cross Blue School fields and climb Monarch’s Way towards to reservoir. Proceed along Old Bristol Road to Walcombe. Then cross A39 at Beryl Farm and walk down fields to Beryl and across (mainly) Drake Road and up across to top Beryl Wood and descend on the other side to Bath Road and return to the Wells Golf Club.
NB. In the light of (to-day’s) recce some re-routing will be needed in the vicinity of Beryl Wood due to terrain.

Report
With anxious looks to the clouds thirteen walkers including a new member left Wells Golf Club, heading for the Blue School by the greenest route, skirting the deserted course.

We walked by the Palace Moat and up the footpath from New Street through the school grounds. Then began the climb across empty fields.

Our coffee stop was in the lee of a barn at Upper Milton. This was the highest point on our walk with fine views across the Levels. A short stretch on the surprisingly busy Old Bristol Road brought us to the gateway of Beryl Farm on the A39 whence we dropped down through countryside and then houses to Torhill Lane and our path back to the Golf Club, where we had an excellent lunch.

Our worries proved groundless as we endured only a light sprinkle on the five and a half miles or so, the route having been altered after the heavy rain the previous day.

Our grateful thanks to Stan and Bleddyn.
