West Pennard walk

Wednesday 30th August – West Pennard

Walk Co-ordinators: Nicky & Patsy

We start from The Apple Tree pub over the fields to Sticklinch. Then we have a steady climb up Castle Hill lane. This is a climb of nearly 400 ft in 0.7 of a mile. The walk co-ordinators are not fit so it will be a slow climb! Once at the top we continue along quiet lanes around the top of Pennard Hill. Some lovely views across Somerset if the weather is clear. We will cross a couple of fields to Cottles Lane then turn on to Moggs Hill going steeply downhill back to Sticklinch and across the fields to the pub. We cross the A361 twice. This is a 4.7 mile walk.

Report
On a bright sunny morning 14 walkers and a dog started the walk from the Apple Tree Inn at West Pennard on the A361. After crossing the busy road we first had to negotiate a gate which had been padlocked (bad farmer!) - climbing over a fence or field gate instead. After a short distance across two grassy fields and the only stile, we continued up a steep lane.

The views at the top over to Pilton to the north and to the Mendips beyond were wonderful! We continued round Pennard Hill on quiet lanes and further along had views over to the Blackdown hills to the south. We passed what looked like a Tree Nursery with young nut and fruit trees. It was pleasant easy walking along the lanes with plenty of ripe blackberries to eat! We turned off the ridge to cross 2 maize fields which didn’t give us any problems and then walked down another very steep lane through Sticklinch and back down to the pub where we had our lunch.

An excellent walk - good weather, lovely views and quiet lanes! Thank you Nicky!
