BBQ Walk

Wednesday 5th July – BBQ walk

Walk Co-ordinators: John L and John W

Starting from the Cricket Club at Horrington we go up through the old hospital site and out over Bath Hill. We go slightly uphill over 2 fields and then down to Biddle Coombe. This coombe is notorious for being slippery in wet weather so care will need to be taken when going down. We go over a bridge and then up a shortish steepish path through the trees to fields above Beryl woods. We will stop here for a break, with superb views over the city of Wells and the Cathedral (dependent on weather of course). We then follow a path through Beryl woods, past Beryl House on to Hawkers Lane down to Bath Road., over the road and then down St Thomas Street, turning left at the bottom along Tor Street and then into Tor Furlong. We go all the way up this lane past the playing fields to the top and thence back to the cricket Ground. The walk is about 4 miles.

Report

The weather was fair with some sunshine but a coldish wind - perfect for walking our 4.1 miles before a very delicious BBQ kindly prepared by members. We started off with 16 walkers, picked up 1 en route and ended with 15 having shed 2 to change into other clothes to be fresh for lunch! 31 walkers and non-walkers enjoyed the BBQ lunch and wonderful salads brought by other members not to mention the puddings!

However, about the walk, it was greatly varied starting uphill through fields towards the transmitter. Then we entered the woods of Biddle Coombe. This was a little scarey after being warned of a slippery steep downhill section but we were all thankful to reach the bridge over the stream at the bottom safely. The uphill climb didn’t seem so bad and quickly we were on top in a field which led into another with splendid views of Wells. A perfect coffee stop!

After that it was downhill through Beryl woods passing Beryl House before we were out on the streets. It seemed rather a long stretch back along St Thomas street, Tor Street, and we were all relieved to head up the drive of South Horrington old Hospital to our waiting drinks and dips. Thanks to our leaders for historical details and caring points.
