Chelynch and Bodden walk

Friday 16th September – Chelynch & Bodden

Walk Leaders: Keith & John L

A 4.3 mile walk starting from The Poachers Pocket, Chelynch at 10 am. Across open fields and tracks and part of the Fosse Way and a short distance along Boulters Lane. Views of the Charlton Viaduct and Glastonbury Tor and may be further. 6 stiles, some stone which need care.

Report
It was a truly autumnal morning -- chillier than for a long time with a stiff breeze and a blue sky -- when sixteen walkers met at the Poacher's Pocket just along from Shepton Mallet for the start of a 4.3 mile [7 km +/-]. There were two 'visitors' Diana and Peter on their first try-out walk.

The walk description was followed through with neither deviation nor getting lost. And for once we had the promised views, right over to the north Somerset coast along the Bristol Channel, being able to clearly see Steep Holm, Hinkley Point, and right round to Minehead. With a view of the Charlton Viaduct, Chris gave us a short interesting history of the Somerset & Dorset Line that used this beautiful piece of railway architecture taking Bristolians down to Bournemouth for a day by sea.

There were six stone stiles, one or two of which proved difficult to negotiate for some folk, but the hill was managed with no difficulty by everyone.

We arrived back at the pub, and as advised before we set off, there was a wake in full swing. However, the landlord had seated us in a small side room where we were well-served with our lunch of choice by the excellent staff: our thanks to them.

Thank you Keith and John for a lovely walk in ideal walking weather.
