Lydford on Fosse walk

Thursday 9th June – Lydford on Fosse

Walk Leader: Keith & John L

A gentle 5.2 mile walk across the rolling landscape of Somerset passing Babcary Meadow Nature Reserve joining the Macmillan Way pass the mill steam over the River Brue through orchards and passing the mid 12th century church of St Peter’s West Lydford.

Report
Most of the 14 walkers had a wet drive down to Lydford on Fosse but the rain stopped before we set off and we were glad we shed our waterproofs before setting out.

It was an easy walk, though there was plenty of long grass. We crossed the railway just before an express flew by and the driver made us well aware of his approach. Then it was along tracks to our coffee stop overlooking the railway at Babcary where another express train roared under the bridge.

We continued to Keinton Mandeville, back through the apple orchards to the weir at West Lydford. There was time to go into the church at West Lydford and we finished the walk with a short stretch along the Fosse Way, built by the Romans to link Exeter to Lincoln.

We had an enjoyable lunch at the Cross Keys. Our thanks to Keith and John for arranging such a pleasant walk with good weather and well timed trains.
