Burrington and Beacon Batch

Thursday 28th April – Burrington

Walk Leader: Jane B

Description
Meet at Castle of Comfort Inn car Park. Car share to car park at Burrington Combe. (1st car park on right after entering the Combe, often quite full hence the car share).

From the carpark, walk back brief distance along the road then take rocky track uphill past Ellick House. Carry on upwards on to Blackdown via triangulation point, then along top track until turning downhill back towards the Combe. Grassy track then lane. Cross road at bottom and go upwards again first along lane then stony track which opens out at the top. Last bit downhill back to where cars parked. Distance about 4 miles.

Report
It was so unusual to have so few walkers on a walk – just 6 of us. Many people are away and some recovering from having had Covid. Nontheless the few met at The Castle of Comfort and drove on in 2 cars to Burrington carpark. Our leader decided to take us round the other way from that which was published, thinking it was better to have the bigger climb at the start of the walk. A wise move.

So, leaving the carpark we climbed up and then down into Burrington. We crossed the road and started the climb up Link Lane. On the way some members collected some Allium Triquetrum (three cornered leeks) which someone had left outside to help yourself. It was slow and steady with frequent stops to admire the view which unfortunately was a bit murky. On and up on to Blackdown. We could not believe just how hard and dry the ground was. Even with the poor visibility we could see Steep Holme and Flat Holme and even Wales.

We walked between the tumps to Beacon Batch and then it was a quick descent back to the Combe and the cars. In all it was just 4 miles. The Castle of Comfort looked after us very well.
