Edford & Holcombe Walk

Tuesday 29th March – Edford & Holcombe

Walk Leaders: Roger & Barbara

We head west from the pub skirting the woods and head up to Spring Farm and Barlake. The path goes up across the fields to the village then down Kilmersdon Common and round Bullock Hill. Then it is along the route of the old canal to Ham, up the hill to the nature reserve and back to Edford Green. The walk is 4.5 miles. The walk starts from Holcombe Farmshop and Kitchen, Edford Hill, Holcombe, BA35HQ [ Formerly the Duke of Cumberland] at 9.45 am.

Report
It was a slightly overcast chilly day but just the right temperature for walking when 17 walkers set out towards Edford Woods. In good spirits we climbed up through the slightly long grass and enjoyed the views whilst waiting to climb the first of several stiles.

There was a great deal of convivial chatter amongst the group as we passed through fields and alongside former coal canals. The spring colours were at their best with delicate yellow primroses, cherry blossom, magnolias and daffodils to name but a few which contributed to the splash of colour.

Barbara expertly led us with Roger adding a few gems in appropriate places. In the woods we saw a few early wood anemones and on the path round the cement works we even found some cowslips. Having had a long dry spell, where there was mud it was quite firm. I don’t think I heard mention of the “mudometer” at any point during the walk.

The former Duke of Cumberland, now the Holcombe Farm shop and Kitchen, laid on a good lunch with our whole party seated at two long tables where we could continue to socialise in their new extension, at the end of a very pleasant walk. With sincere thanks to Barbara and Roger for a well organised walk.
