"Norwegian Wood" by Haruki Murakami

GROUP MEETING 15th JUNE 2023
DISCUSSION OF THIS MONTH'S Book ~
“Norwegian Wood” by Haruki Murakami (led by George Dickey).
(this is general report so no details, that could act as spoilers for others wanting to read the book, are given)
There followed a very lively discussion about the book. It was kept informal and everyone had an opinion and was allowed to express it.
One of the Book's character's, in particular, gave rise to some very conflicting views and that character's role in the story differed from member to member.
After the discussed we summarised :-
BOOK SCORE Three and a half (3.5) out of Five (5) ~ Range (3~ 4)
It was noted that the authur was surprised at the success of the book and felt depressed for some time after publication.
THE MEMBERS FELT:-
The book was not one that members would normally have selected as their choice
It was generally accepted as a good read but the first two chapters were “a bit of a struggle”. After that it painted realistic characters and introduced the reader to some Japanese culture that they might not have been aware off.
The story was easily followed but, maybe, there was a little bit of disappointment in the way the book finished and it needed a more defined conclusion. There was a feeling that a sequel could have been planned but never written.
Although one member had read another of Haruki Murakami's book the others were not in any hurry to read any more of his works.
