ITALIAN

Leader Norma Priest
Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of every month in the Pavilion, Dartmouth Park, West Bromwich.
10-12noon

Beginners are very welcome to come along to the sessions.

Norma held the first Italian class in February 2007 at Braybrook House, with nine students. The class is now doing very well, having studied present and perfect tense, imperfect tense and also future tense as well as other points of grammar.

Improvers' class students have been able to translate from modern Italian magazines using everyday Italian [not Italian for students], and also from Italian literature such as Carlo Levi's 'Christ Stopped At Eboli' [Cristo si e fermato a Eboli]. There are now three students left in this class.

The new beginners' class first began at the new Health Centre nearly six years ago with 17 students before moving to the Wesley Chapel in West Bromwich. There followed a couple of years at The Public before moving back to the Wesley Centre in January 2014, and they are now held at the Central Library in West Bromwich. There are currently 10 students in this class, which has now been amalgamated with the improvers' class. The beginners' class has studied the present tense as well as some points from other tenses such as the perfect, and future tenses, as well as other basic points of grammar.

In September 2008 both classes took part in a short film about how to order and pay for a meal in an Italian Restaurant. Six people actually had speaking parts, the rest were 'film extras', but the star of the show was Sue Clothier who took the major part of the waitress. One of the rooms at Menzies High School, where the film was shot, was dressed as an Italian Restaurant complete with tables, tablecloths, menus etc., in the Italian national colours of red, white and green, and a great time was had by all.

Both of our Italian classes are open-ended and could go on for as long as necessary. New members are always welcome however it would be better if people have already done a little Italian, or some other foreign language,m or have a working knowledge of English grammar, however attendance is up to the student.
