World TV
World TV
Reasons for exploring this:
1. American TV is full of violence, drugs, guns and gangsters;
especially guns.
2. British TV (great documentaries apart) is generally dark,
gritty and depressing.
3. Actors who mumble and interfering music often make
dialogue hard to follow.
By contrast, TV from the rest of the world reflects those more
civilised cultures: it is often either funny, bright & cheery, or if more
serious, it can still be optimistic and uplifting.
And the dialogue all comes with subtitles: once you get used to
that, they are a godsend.
Not to compete with the U3A Film group, we will look only at TV
series. I know some delightful series from Spain, France, Brazil,
Colombia, China and especially South Korea. You may know of
good things elsewhere.
I have subscriptions to Netflix and Prime. I don't have Apple TV,
Max, Hulu or Disney - mostly these are too American for my taste.
To profit from this group, you will probably need a subscription,
and Netflix is by far the best for our purposes.
My idea is that we could watch one chosen episode at each
meeting (taking turns to choose). Then we would discuss it and
members can go home and watch the whole series if they wish.
Location - copyright rules seem to rule out meeting in public
places, so we need to use our own homes by turns - but don’t
worry if you can’t host for any reason. Hopefully most of us have a
TV room that will take five or six people. If we recruit too many for
this, we’ll have to declare the group full, or think again.
