Local Studies
Local Studies group has space for more members. You might call us a group of enthusiastic amateur local history enthusiasts. Some of us research topics, some of us write up our research and share it, others come to listen and learn and some that come to listen get the research bug themselves.
Our group might be of interest for those confident with public speaking, all sorts of organisations are actively looking for speakers on local history and this group provides a mine of ideas to explore.
It is a pleasantly unstructured group, we meet on an ad hoc basis but usually on a Tuesday morning at 10.30am. Topics likely to be discussed at a session are shared by the Convenor in advance of the next meeting date and if you feel ready to share you can add your topic to that list.
Topics discussed in the group at recent sessions included, Local political advertising media from past decades, The Jewish Community in Jersey, The life and times of Norman Le Brocq, The darker side of the Channel Island Cod fishing industry and a Tale of Two bays (the history to be found in Ouaisne and St Brelade Bays).
Topics researched and published by group members in the past include The Rise and Fall of Manufacturing Industry in Jersey in the 20th Century, Clare Street — Cannon Street, The Jersey Dispensary and Infirmary, and the Le Bas Centre, The Village of Les Landes and many more (https://medium.com/@JU3ALS)
