Poetry
When: 3rd Thursday of month. 10 am
Where: Light Railway Hall, Hythe.
In this group we are on an exciting voyage of discovery of all the splendours, and forms, of poetry, from Beowulf to Carol Ann Duffy!
To make this happen, and to keep the approach fresh, I choose poems for each session which are a surprise revealed on the day. In this way, group members approach the poems, so far as possible, without pre-conceptions.
We read, recite, and tackle the poems together to bring out the meanings and full enjoyment of each piece.
For each meeting therefore I bring photocopies of poems (@ 10p per page) to read and discuss. As said, we look at many different types of poem, both old and new. We usually look at about six poems per meeting.
Members need not prepare anything nor attend every meeting (although please notify me by the Monday in advance (not the night before!) if you are not coming. Otherwise I will bring the printed copies the following session and expect to be reimbursed for them then.
Anyone is welcome, whether already knowledgeable or otherwise. The only absolute criterion is to listen to what others have to say. Some people prefer only to listen and no-one is obliged to speak.
We meet in the function room at the rear of the RHDR café, Hythe, from 10 till noon every first and third Thursday of the month, October to June (July) inclusive every year. Coffee costs £2 and tea £1.50. You pay me 10p for biscuits. Outside school holidays, half-terms, and particularly good weather days, you may park at the back of the function room (12 spaces), or, if there is room, in the main car park, or please use neighbouring roads.
The forthcoming meetings are therefore:
