Novels 1

The Novels 1 Group brings together people who love books and wish to discuss what makes a book a great and lasting experience. Novels can be fun, gripping, emotional and perhaps inspirational. They are a window on other lives, loves, tragedies and, indeed, the comic.
“So Matilda’s strong young mind continued to grow, nurtured by the voices of all those authors who had sent their books out into the world like ships on the sea. These books gave Matilda a hopeful and comforting message: You are not alone.” Roald Dahl
The books we will read in the 2023/24 season are:

September Wyllard’s Weird Mary E. Braddon
October The Dressmaker’s Gift Fiona Valpy
November The Turn of the Screw Henry James
December Scoop Evelyn Waugh
January The Accidental Ali Smith
February Tender is the Night F. Scott Fitzgerald
March Summer Edith Wharton
April Hagseed Margaret Atwood
May Slow Horses Mick Herron
June No Country for Old Men Cormac McCarthy

There is a range of genres in the list including crime, literary, western and horror. Discussions on each book are wide ranging, interesting and often surprising as different aspects and interpretations emerge.
We meet on the second Wednesday of the month 10.30am-12.30pm at the Tin Tabernacle between September and June.
The group is at capacity at the moment but if you would like to be placed on the waiting list, please inform the U3A at shepwaygroups@gmail.com
