April 2024

Board Games – A new group will be starting on the 9th April and every following 2nd Tuesday in the month.!! I’m sure many of you have games from Christmas that you would like to play, so I thought it would be a good idea to start a new group doing just this. Please bring along any games and we shall have a break at three to enjoy tea and biscuits.

Bus Pass Explorers – At the beginning of March, 10 of us boarded the buses for Llandovery. It was an interesting journey with a number of diversions to normally unvisited villages. Only 8 were on the return bus as 2 had warned us they could stay on for the next. To date we have not heard from them, but the natives were friendly! In April we will try to lose a few more, this time in Narberth.

Sunday Lunch – This month’s lunch will be in the Hilltop, also known as the Jollies..

Welsh History – March 19th - Rhian Rees (Swansea Branch, Historical Association), 'The Role of Women in Medieval Wales'

Book Club – March we are reading "Night Train to Marrakesh" by Dinah Jefferies. Sounds good.

Discussion Group –February's discussion was on "A person's right to defend their home". We had a most enjoyable but slightly unstructured meeting in March when we discussed several subjects. Next month's discussion is "Should new rules be brought in for both new drivers and those over 65 years?" If you have a view come and share it.

Drama – The aim of the Drama group is to encourage persons to take part in new productions of plays and pantos for the viewing of U3A members. This can be anything from writing plays, performing in them, or working backstage with props and costumes. We wish to encourage more members to join this drama group and have some fun. You will also meet new friends. We are all very friendly and will be glad to see you. So come and join us.

Postage Stamps – Please remember to save them. Just cut around them leaving a few millimetres gap, bar code IS important!

Bucket List – Have a look at the new ‘Bucket List’ of things you would like to do and add your own. No wild dreams like ‘fly me to the moon’, but things achievable in a day trip by car(s).

Subscriptions – This year your membership card will be your receipt for your membership subscription.

Speakers – If any group engages a speaker from outside U3A, could the leader please inform Paul Amor at least a week before the event of the details of any payment required so that he has time to organise a cheque, cash or barter beans, whatever.

Outings – It has proved too expensive to arrange coach trips. We are faced with a minimum of £20 per seat and would need to completely fill the coach in order to break even. The committee have decided that if enough of members with their own transport would agree to drive a number of passengers to a selected destination and receive a £5 donation from each traveller for doing so, then trips to St Fagans for instance would be affordable - £5 for transport, rather than £20, plus entrance fee. We will test the idea in June, July and August. A month before each event we will advertise the destination and provide a sheet for those wishing to go – with space for those willing to drive to indicate number passenger seats. As a point of interest, the national eisteddfod will be in Pontypridd this August, from 3rd to 10th.

Peter Thomas – It is with great pleasure that I can report that Mr Thomas has once again taken up residence in Burry Port, although it will be some time before he ventures outside his four walls.

Motherhood – As we have recently celebrated Mothering Sunday, I thought you (mostly ladies) would appreciate these few quotes given to me via Glenys a few years ago and just unearthed.
I don’t have a 9-5, I have a ”when I open my eyes to when I close my eyes”
I don’t want to sleep like a baby. I want to sleep like my husband.
The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother.
He asked why the house isn’t clean since I’m home all day. I asked why we aren’t rich since he works all day.
