MONTHLY MEETINGS

Meetings are held on the third Monday of the month during term time.

The meetings take place in the in the main hall of the Community Centre at Edgware & Hendon Reform Synagogue, Stonegrove.
The Community Centre is a large building at the rear of the main Synagogue and the Hall is a very large area allowing plenty of room for social distancing. It is on the first floor of the building, but there is a lift for those unable to use the stairs.

On-site parking is available but limited typically to those with disabled badges. If you do need a parking space you must register your vehicle with the main office at least 24 hours in advance. However, there is plenty of local on-street parking available.

The meetings usually finish by 12.15pm

Tea/coffee and biscuits are served from 10.30am and the meetings start at 11.00am with a report from the Chairman on latest branch news. Then follows a talk from an invited guest on a subject of general interest with questions from the floor.

Notification of the dates, names of speakers and subjects are also provided to members in the newsletters and in regular information bulletins.

Stanmore and District U3A regularly arrange visits to theatres and to places of interest.

Dr Peter Altman:

His talk is entitled:

'Does Alien Life Exist' (From his book 'Mysteries of the Universe')

Peter qualified as a biochemist in the 1960s and spent 20 years in medical research, gaining a PhD and a DSc.

After being made redundant in the 1980s, he went into medical book publishing, setting up his own medical publishing company which Peter ran for some 10 years.

He is also a Member of the Magic Circle and rather impressively, and without the use of magic, Peter has held not one but two Guinness World Records (for the fastest journeys round the London Underground [1979]; and the Moscow Metro [1989]).

Peter started work on Mysteries over 15 years ago, and came up with the approach of framing each of the 14 chapters as a question; Does Alien Life Exist? Is Time Travel Possible? How Did the Universe Begin? etc., and provides a personal ‘Best Guess’ answer to each unknown.

The subject of his talk today is very intriguing , 'does alien life exist' and one that is sure to generate much debate!
