Garden Appreciation

The Gardening Group has been in existence for a good number of years. It is made up of people who are interested in flowers, plants and gardens as a whole.

We visit both private & public gardens, mainly within the Cheshire & Derbyshire boundaries, although we have occasionally travelled further. Following our trip we usually have lunch where we can have a friendly chat with each other.

Recently we went round the gardens at New Mills School & prior to that a boat trip was organised along the canal where we saw the back gardens of Poynton & Marple. On another occasion we visited Mockridges garden centre in Ashton, which offered great value for plants in terms of quality & price.

We meet on the first Wednesday of each month, usually around 10.30am.

Between heavy rain on the 6th and sleet and snow on the 8th we first went on the 7th February for a coffee in Hyde and then visited Hyde Park. No, not the one in London! This is our local Hyde Park. We walked up a semi wild area until a small cafe called Java hence the name it being a cafe. Nearby is a tall Victorian drinking water fountain. An inscription made us smile. It said: “This fountain was presented to the Hyde Corporation by the Total Abstainers of the Borough.” Did they not even drink tea?
Then we meandered round a lovely well laid-out formal garden with circular beds. That was a tranquillity garden opened in 2005 and on the path was a poem which we read while walking along. It said:
“I do not sleep
I am in the bird that sings
I am in each gentle thing
I am in the flowers that bloom
I am in a quiet room.”
Near to it is the Hyde Community Orchard with a circular mosaic showing round it apple varieties, plums, sweet cherries encircled by low seats with insect mosaics on them. The path then went fairly steeply down to a natural running stream and woods.
Very nice and with a lovely atmosphere. Most plants were still fast asleep but the Snowdrops and Crocuses were blooming and made us smile.
Afterwards we went to for a meal at ‘The Spread Eagle’ in Romiley.
We want to thank Anne who arranged this wonderful outing. Many of us had never been to this place.

On Wednesday 6th March we went to Compstall where we met at the Etherow cafe at the Garden park for our morning coffee. After many rainy days with record breaking rainfall in February we were feasted to a lovely windless day . The water of the ponds were like a mirror and reflected the bare trees like pen drawings. In contrast the weir was almighty from the water from the river Etherow charging down in a thundering force. Snowdrops were still in bloom in contrast with many wax like looking yellow Celandines and Colt’s-foot were beginning to show their yellow petals and they look like cousins of the common Dandelion.
The great variety of birds and their great number provided an additional nice springlike feeling to our walk at Etherow.

Afterwards we indulged ourselves with a very nice meal at the Railway Inn at Rose Hill in Marple.
Thank you Anne for organising this lovely day which we really enjoyed.
