Romiley & District

Welcome

U3A stands for the University of the Third Age, which is a self-help organisation for people no longer in full time employment providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in an informal and friendly environment.
The Romiley and District U3A is a Registered Charity ( Number 1119203) and is a member of the Third Age Trust. The Third Age Trust is the governing body of the U3A's in the UK and provides information and help on running a U3A and the Groups and provides on-line courses. Further information can be found by selecting the U3A tab above. The North West U3A also provides help and advice and runs Summer Schools and courses for members. Further information can be obtained by selecting the link on the right hand side of this page.
Our branch was formed in 2000, and our membership is currently around 200. There is a general meeting on the fourth Thursday of each month at the Romiley Community Centre. This involves a presentation by a guest speaker followed by information of, and reports on, group activities.

Three Newsletters are produced each year. The current Newsletter can be found by clicking onto the link on the right. As from November 2016: Note please, that we are now making the Newsletter available as a .pdf. If you do not yet have Adobe Reader, you should install it now (free) at https://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/. If you do not wish to install Adobe Reader, your Website Manager can provide the Newsletter as a .rtf file, which is readable by any Word Processor.

We have for many years had two types of member - full and associate, but that is changed as from 2018. From then on we only continue with Full Membership. Membership for a year remains at £10.00 for full membership. Historically there had been a need to control closely the number of people at the Monthly Meetings (due to Fire Safety Regulations), the mechanism for that being to limit the number of Full Members (the alternative then was Associate Membership, which did not permit attendance at the Monthly Meeting). That limitation is no longer being encountered, so Associate Membership can now be set aside.

Please note that General Meetings start promptly at 2.00pm.

We have numerous interest groups and also combine with other local U3A's to provide additional activities. Groups meet usually in members houses, but also in the Community Centre, and at visit locations. Trips out are by coach, private cars or public transport, whichever is deemed most appropriate.

Each year we support a Charity. In 2017 we collected for the local charity "New Horizons Canal Boat", and in 2018 we collected for the Wellspring in Stockport. In 2019 we are now collecting for "The Weekend Day Centre for Dementia Care".

Romiley is a member of the Pennine Link network of U3A's. More information on the Pennine Link can be found by clicking onto the link at the top right of this page.
