Art Appreciation

The Art Appreciation group consists of 18 members (with 2 on a waiting list) and we meet on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. At the moment we are using the Committee room at the Romiley Community Centre. We also visit Art Galleries and exibitions.
We discuss artists and their work and try to define 'What is art?'.
In the period covered by this newsletter, we have struggled to keep going, but somehow, overcoming difficulties of finding a venue and problems arising from illness of members, we have done so.

In October, we met at Mary's and viewed a film about the sculptures of Alberto Giacometti, a Swiss artist who is regarded as one of the most important sculptors of the 20th Century. His early works were very small (not more than three inches tall) but after his marriage in 1949 his works became taller and, as they became taller, extremely slender (skinny!). Normally , he sculpted humans, especially women, but there is one of a dog which is so emaciated I found it distressing. His life and works are interesting and well worth “googling” for more information. We met at Stella Walker’s in November and finally managed a full viewing of a DVD about Vermeer. (Our attempt at an earlier meeting had suffered from technical problems.) He specialised in domestic interior scenes of Dutch middle class life. He was born in Delft and, apart from a brief absence on business, he never left Delft. His death at only 43 years of age was a great loss as his output was not large and might have been increased in a longer life.
Irene provided our accommodation, and Christmas hospitality, in December. We saw
an interview with David Hockney and pictures of his work. He is an unassuming but very talented man - a national institution? - and the afternoon was much enjoyed. New members would be very welcome. (We do not meet in January.)
