A sketch of our district of "Hartlepool" in mediaeval times. The Monastery of 640 was founded on the island of Heruteu within land granted by King Oswy which later became part of the Earldom of Northumbria and then Hartness, which was the fiefdom of the de Brus family on the North side of the Tees and centred on Hart, reaching from Castle Eden Dene to Billingham on the Tees.
