ARCHAEOLOGY & HISTORY
Programme of Walks and Talks for 2020
All talks are held at the People's Centre in Raby Road and meetings start at 10.30 am.
All trips meet at a central point at an agreed time except with Rail travel when we will meet at the Railway Station
to suit travel plans. Each event day is a THURSDAY.
Subscriptions for 2020 are due £5 per head from 1st April. Each meeting of the group also carries a £2 cover charge. Coffee and tea are also available at 60p per cup. New members are always welcome so come along and try one of our events. The initial visit is free. Thereafter you must join the Group.
January 9th 'Home Comforts' The role of the Red Cross Auxiliary Hospitals in the North Riding 1914-1919. Ann Wall
February 13th 'Binchester' An update of the findings from the digs and research on the finds and all the latest thinking on the role
of the fort. Gordon Henderson
March 12th An away day to visit Summerhill district of Newcastle just along Westgate so a train and a bus trip. Summerhill is the
site of Ravenswoth Terrace which was the subject of the TV series 'A house though time' We will walk round the area
looking at the architecture of the period.
April 9th 'River Wear Assemblage' Gary Bankhead returns to update us on his work excavating at Elver Bridge in Durham City.
May 14th A London day out by train to visit the Wallace Collection at Hertford House just off Bond St to see the wonderful art
collection of the Marquises of Hertford.
June 11th. A talk from John Derry, this time an area he often alludes to when making a point during one of his talks namely
'Cinema Memories' the Golden Age of the 30s, 40s and 1950s cinema.
July 9th An away trip to Brancepeth Castle, just west of Durham City for a tour of the castle especially with its connections to
the 1569 Rising of the North when the Earl of Westmoreland, owner of the castle, gathered his troops there in the bid
to put Mary Queen if Scots on the throne of England.
Sept 10th 'Those Gigantic Statues': Cook and Easter Island. Phil Philo returns to talk on Cook's experiences on Easter Island.
October 8th Away day TBA
November 12th A talk by Margaret Bozic, this time on the CAB in the 1950s on Teeside
December 10th A talk is being arranged
