Monthly meetings in Exmouth Pavilion and weekly meetings online

We usually meet in Exmouth Pavilion on the second Thursday of the month. We also meet online via Zoom every Thursday morning at our "Zoom Coffee and Chat" events (connection details for this are sent to members direct by email and are in the members' newsletter, and for further information see this group in the Groups section).

Past Talk Recordings

A number of the presentations given in Exmouth Pavilion and online over the past three years have been recorded. You can watch these at any time on our Exmouth & District u3a YouTube channel

As an example, the following link gives a re-run of Christine Chittock's talk 'Mary Anning Rocks' given to u3a members via Zoom on 4 February 2021: ‘Mary Anning Rocks’ – a sequence of photos set to music. This was very topical, as after a campaign by a teenage girl a bronze statue of Mary Anning is in progress to celebrate the achievements of one of our greatest fossil hunters of the nineteenth century, who made exciting discoveries around Lyme Regis. Our first talk this year talk was Peter Scott's talk at the January 2024 Monthly Meeting on 'A Day in the Life of a Magistrate' (see photo collage by Christine Chittock on the right). This was recorded and you can see it on our u3a YouTube channel by clicking or tapping on this link: January 2024 Monthly Meeting

Our speaker was photographer David Bailey…no, not the fashion photographer, but an excellent wildlife photographer! Self-taught, David has developed a successful career and has worked on many programmes for ITV and BBC, Springwatch and Coast and Country for example. David gave an informative, interesting and entertaining talk illustrated by his beautiful photographs and videos. Audience participation was encouraged by his amusing ‘body parts’ quiz. David brought some of his merchandise and was happy to sign any books bought and chat to our members.

This month’s talk was from George Hislop, a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable RNLI volunteer. George showed many facts and amazing films of training and rescues. Founded in 1824 and originally called the National Institute for Preservation of Shipwrecks, the RNLI has saved more than 144,000 lives at sea! Headquarters is at Poole, Dorset where the training facilities are state of the art. They have their own hotel and welcome visitors. In 2022, 226 people died ‘by accident’ in UK and Irish waters. Half of those didn’t expect to be in the water! In total there were 9,312 launches, 16,476 people were aided and 389 lives were saved. The majority of those who serve in the RNLI are volunteers and, along with those salaried, gave 75,379 hours at sea! In 2022 Exmouth station made 75 launches and aided 73 people. No lives were lost! As a charity, the RNLI is always looking for dedicated volunteers who raise awareness, give safety advice and help in their museums, offices, shops and visitor centres. Exmouth u3a were lucky enough to have a fascinating and entertaining talk from Sheila Parķer, entitled from Tiller Girl to Vernon Girl. Sheila trained as a dancer and in music from an early age and had an extraordinary life in show-biz. Sheila knew and performed with many stars and was clearly known for her professionalism and dedication. She performed with many well-known entertainers, appeared on the 65 Special and many other memory stirring shows. Sheila also knew Paul McCartney as a child, when they lived on the same estate and received a televised apology from him for breaking her nose! A fabulous talk enjoyed by all who heard it. Thank you Sheila.
