I was thrilled to hear of the possibility of a U3A starting in Beccles, having friends who were members elsewhere in the country. The inaugural meeting on the 24th of September 2014 ( I remember it well as my grandson was born that morning )to gauge interest was a real eye-opener. The Blyburgate hall was packed, with a real buzz in the air. Peter and Susan Shannon had worked hard to research and prepare for the possible set up of a U3A in our town.

Just a few weeks later, Beccles U3A was born. I joined at the earliest opportunity and have thoroughly enjoyed the last 10 years and I’m now a keen advocate of the benefits of U3A membership.

Over the years I have been part of several groups, including Scrabble, iPad, Computer Confidence and still enjoy my weekly Table Tennis, and Short Tennis sessions and the monthly Family History group, where I have discovered lots about my ancestors, including the criminals!

I am happy to be part of the refreshment rota and have thoroughly enjoyed many interesting talks over the last decade. I have made lots of lovely new friends and I am much fitter than I was 10 years ago!

Thank you to all the committee who work so hard to keep everything running smoothly.

Congratulations on 10 great years and here’s to the next decade🥂🏓

I went along to an open afternoon in spring 2017- and came away as convenor of a new group "Creative Writing", I enjoyed the experience and made some lovely new friends - our meetings were enjoyable and it was amazing the talent some people had for writing!

I also became the business secretary for a term of 4 years - I really enjoyed being able to use my admin skills and being actively involved in the day to day running of this wonderful group.

Something I am proud of is introducing the concept of Welcome meetings for new members. These were held 2 or 3 times a year - usually hosted by myself and Graham Jermyn, Chair at the time. I think it really helped new members to learn more about the organisation and to feel welcome.

I wish Beccles u3a many more years of providing such great socail and learning opportunities for local people.

Re the first experiences of U3A on joining in October 22, my wife and I have enjoyed some excellent walks with the Historic Walks group 3, and singing with the Singing for Fun group.A pity we didn't join earlier! Good to meet so many friendly people.
