Bearsden & Milngavie

Sally Magnusson

For our May monthly meeting Bearsden and Milngavie u3a had the pleasure of hosting author, broadcast journalist and TV presenter Sally Magnusson being interviewed by journalist Anne Balfour. The occasion was the launch of Sally’s new book, “Music in the Dark”.

Anne skilfully led the discussion through Sally’s background and the storyline of the book with Sally expanding on her upbringing and memories of her family and their experiences of having to leave their homes in the northwest of Scotland for the big smoke of Glasgow. It is a story of a brutal episode of the Highland Clearances, the aftermath and ongoing lasting effects upon a people forced to flee. Sally gave several animated readings of passages from the book illustrating each with the background research she had carried out and, in particular, the portrayal of strength of character of the women woven through the fabric of the story.

Following the extremely entertaining and informative interview a queue formed at the temporary Waterstones store and Sally set to work signing, taking the time to speak to each purchaser and adding personal notes in the books.
