Wed May 22nd | Other | Parks & Pews outing. For this visit we'll explore the fascinating little known gem of Postmans Park. A former cemetery and now a public park. It is the home of the poignant Memorial to Self Sacrifice with stories of heroism depicted on beautiful ceramic tiles. The garden is well laid out and has some interesting trees. The former cemetery closed in the 1850s due to running out of space because of the cholera epidemic. After this we'll visit one of the loveliest and oldest churches in the City, it survived both the Great Fire of London and the Blitz, namely St Bartholomew the Great in Smithfield. As usual we'll stop for refreshments and a toilet break. This walk is relatively short and easily accessible with just a few steps to navigate. Meet at 11am outside St Paul's tube station, exit for Cheapside where Caffe Nero is. |
