Wandsworth

Wider Learning opportunities

Wandsworth U3A in Wandsworth
We are committed to being part of Wandsworth life and many members are members of other local organisations as well as the U3A and we are being asked more frequently to take part in community projects. For example a group of members took part in work at the Pump House in Battersea Park where they were involved in studying the skills needed for curating exhibitions . They then helped to curate for the public exhibition ‘The trouble with painting today’ at the Pump House.
We have collaborated in the past with Battersea Arts Centre (BAC) on a number of projects. BAC is an innovative and nationally known arts centre with many interesting and unusual productions being tried out there for the first time, it is also actively involved in the heritage of Battersea and Wandsworth.
U3A has been involved in several projects with them and have completed a project on the memories of the Second World War especially those who were evacuated. We also worked with two schools and from this project a time capsule has been created to be buried under the floors of BAC until 2080.
Wandsworth U3A took part in Wandsworth Heritage Festival with a display of memorabilia from World War Two at the BAC.

South West London U3As
Merton, Kingston, Richmond, Hammersmith and Fulham and Wandsworth U3As collaborate to put on Study Days and single lectures at various venues with the aim of getting to know our area better. In the recent past, subjects have included History along the Thames from Kingston to Putney, Literary South West London and the History of the buildings of Richmond Park.

Shared Learning Projects (SLP's) are also organised with a local interest. In the past year SLPs have worked at the Langdon Downs Museum of Learning Disability at Teddington, at Hillcroft College in Surbiton, and at the Margravine Cemetery in Hammersmith. Additionally two groups have produced illustrated books for members on places to visit in the area and short biographies of people who once lived in SW London. Further SLPs are being organised for the coming months.
For all shared learning projects it is essential that participants are on email.
