The aim of this group is to enable members to explore their interest in Geology and discover more. No experience is necessary. We discuss subjects of interest and some members research particular issues and make presentations.
We are a small group, currently meeting in a home to receive illustrated presentations, mainly from members of the group, followed by questions and discussion. We are all amateurs and the level of presentations reflects this. We welcome new members and advanced knowledge of the subject is not necessary. Past or present hill-walkers will find much to interest them.
Forthcoming topics in 2024 are:
26 March: Assynt in West Sutherland and the late 19th century controversy on the geology of the north-west highlands.
30 April: James Hutton (1726-97), the Edinburgh geologist who first proposed an ancient earth.
28 May: Tectonic plates: the movement of continents and the development of tectonic plate theory.
25 June (provisional) a field trip, probably to an east coast site.
