"Ready for to Go to Sea" 2020

More than a hundred and twenty u3a members joined us on-line by Zoom for this study morning on Saturday 14 November 2020.

England’s nourishment, wealth and safety have for centuries depended on ships and the sea; shipping and sailors have shaped our history.

In The Siren Sea Imogen Corrigan brought to life the world of the medieval mariner with his hopes, fears and superstitions - how he built ships, navigated uncharted seas, and fought to save his life and cargo from storm and shipwreck. In The Cinque Ports in the Middle Ages Dr Sheila Sweetinburgh explained the privileges the Ports enjoyed, for providing ships and seamen for the king, and explored stories of Portsmen who engaged in fishing, trading and sometimes piracy.
