Tony Diamond has written a book entitled The Hijacking of Edith Cavell. His talk at the Tuesday meeting on 12 November 2021 was introducing us to Edith although quite a few of those present already knew of her. The unfortunate nurse was executed by the Germans on the false premise that she was a spy. She was in fact working in Belgium to help all those who needed treatment and including Germans. There was a tremendous fuss about her death even suggestions that the Kaiser himself shot her. As recruitment was flagging for volunteers to fight the authorities in the UK used her demise to whip up fever and so enhance recruitment. A very interesting and well delivered talk.
