Shipston-on-Stour is a town and civil parish on the River Stour about 10 miles (16 km) south of Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire. It is in the northern part of the Cotswolds, close to the boundaries with Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire. Historical records show that in the 8th century its name was Scepwaeisctune, Old English for Sheep-wash-Town, as it was once an important sheep market. The name evolved through Scepwestun in the 11th century, Sipestone, Sepwestun and Schipton in the 13th century and Sepestonon-Sture in the 14th century.
The concept behind the University of the Third Age (U3A) is for the retired or semi-retired to come together with others to share their experience of, or interest in, various topics and activities. You should not be put off by the word "University" in our title. We welcome those with an academic interest in a subject, but equally those who simply want to take part in (for example) play-reading, theatre visits, wine appreciation, learning bridge, or "ambling" (gentle rambling).
Shipston Area U3A (SOSAU3A) was formed on 27 May 2014, and has since grown to over 400 members, with currently 40 active Interest Groups. These are varied in subject, so there should hopefully be something for everyone, but we encourage members to suggest an idea for a new one, particularly if they're prepared to take a role in its organisation.
Members of any other U3A are invited to attend our monthly meetings, and to join any one Interest Group indefinitely without joining SOSAU3A. To attend more than one Interest group, you are requested to join SOSAU3A.
Membership costs £14 per year (£10.50 for those who are already a paid-up member of another U3A).
Our Monthly Meetings (with a guest Speaker) are held in the Townsend Hall, 52 Sheep St, Shipston. Meeting details are shown on the EVENTS page. There's a charge of £2 to cover hall hire and refreshments.
Both Members and visitors are welcome to these meetings. Visitors may attend two monthly meetings before deciding whether to join us. A similar policy applies to all Interest groups.
If you'd like more information, please go to the CONTACT page and send us an email via the form that is set out on that page. We look forward to meeting you.
