Festive Lunch January 2024
Festive Lunch
Almost 60 people enjoyed an excellent post festive meal at Heslam Park, Scunthorpe on the 24thJanuary. This was totally due to the efforts of Mary and Ann who had arranged everything. Thank you both!! This is the first time we have used this venue for such a function and the feedback was very positive.
Also, for the first time, members from Scunthorpe u3a and North Lindsey
u3a joined together for the event and it appeared to be well received by all. Once again, ourspecial thanks to Mary and Ann for organising and making a pleasant, few hours for us in the middle of a gloomy January day.

DECEMBER MEETING 2023

Members of the Scunthorpe u3a and guests were invited to some Christmas Festivities on Friday 8th December 2023, at St Paul’s Church Hall, provided by “Fool’s Gold”, who had travelled from Durham for the occasion. During their Christmas Show the duo entertained us with music, singing and stories throughout the afternoon. Their songs and stories were backed up with animated videos, movie clips and pictures on a large screen whilst they sang old favourites such as “In the Bleak Midwinter”, “Walking in a Winter Wonderland”, “Silent Night”, “Let it Snow” and many others. It was a great show and very professional, with a little learning on the way such as St Nicholas being the patron saint of not only bankers but merchant sailors, archers, children, pirates, butchers, and even repentant thieves! There was some audience participation starting with us all shouting “Humbug!” and joining in the carols. Fool’s Gold told the story of Christmas in the trenches in 1914 and the football game that ensued. They shared the knowledge that the most famous Christmas song “White Christmas” was recorded in just 9 minutes. Members left with a sense of Christmas around the corner having had an enjoyable afternoon’s entertainment.

KIRTON GALA JULY 2023
Scunthorpe u3a had a stall at the Kirton Gala earlier this month. It was a typical English Summer Day with a yellow weather warning for thunder, lightening and hail! Despite all this, our hardy band of volunteers did a great job and people did come to the event.
I want to extend a huge thank you to all those who helped. Giles, who had prepared the display board and loaded his car with tables, chairs and a gazebo, only to then dislocate his knee! David kindly volunteered to drive Giles’ car to the event with all the required equipment. Eleanor, Ann & David battled valiantly to erect the gazebo under Giles’s eagle eye. Once set up, the stall did look good and especially the display board with its emphasis on
pictures of interest groups.
Mary’s sat nav took her on an unplanned trip to Gainsborough, and then with June & Margaret stopped the gazebo from taking off in a huge storm. I think they had the worst of the weather. Karen, Christine and Maria covered the afternoon shift and my long suffering husband Tony who helped me dismantle everything in the pouring rain.
Everyone who helped was very professional, chatty with members of the public and on time for their shift! Absolutely brilliant!!
We talked to lots of people, many had not heard of u3a before and handed out a leaflet of our activities. Several expressed an interest and we hope they (or their friends or elderly relatives) will join us.
