Hope Valley

2016 AGM

The second Annual General Meeting of the Hope Valley U3A was held at 2:00pm on 19th May 2016 in the Methodist Hall, Hathersage.

Our guest speaker was Roy Hattersley (The Rt Hon. the Lord Hattersley). Roy talked about his literary career. The title of his talk was Really I’m a Writer.

Roy Hattersley is always described on radio and television as the ‘former deputy leader of the Labour Party.’ But he has enjoyed a much longer career as a writer. He has been a weekly columnist for Punch, The Spectator, the Daily Mail, the Daily Express. He wrote Endpiece for the Guardian every week (except one) for twenty seven years. He has just completed his twenty fourth book. The list includes three novels and biographies of John Wesley, William Booth and David Lloyd George. He will explain why writing is now his occupation - and his obsession.

Roy Sydney George Hattersley, Baron Hattersley, FRSL, PC (born 28 December 1932) is a Labour politician, author and journalist from Sheffield. He was MP for Birmingham Sparkbrook for 33 years from 1964 to 1997. He served as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party from 1983 to 1992.
