Richard III Study Day - Barnard Castle

I am sending the following information concerning a Study Day (open to all) to be held in St Mary's Parish Church on Sat 20th April - if this could be disseminated to your members (esp. those in any history sub-groups). My email address can be made available to anyone who would wish to purchase a ticket for this event - thank you.

Tickets are now on sale for a Study Day to be held in St Mary's Church, Barnard Castle on Saturday 20th April. The day is being hosted by the Northern Dales Richard III Group and is open to all members of the public. The day will consist of four talks -

David Santiuste is a historian of late medieval Britain and teaching fellow in history and humanities at the Centre for Open Learning, University of Edinburgh. He will be speaking on “‘A Very Great Lord’: The Life and Reputation of Henry Beaufort, Duke of Somerset.”

Dr Tim Sutherland is visiting Lecturer at the University of York with a number of articles on Battlefield and Conflict Archaeology. An international expert on Conflict Archaeology, he has also been a presenter of documentaries on Medieval and Viking Dead, and the Battle of Towton. His talk is ‘Comparing the skeletal evidence of RIII’s death with other medieval weapon trauma’.

Ian and Carol Schubert are longstanding members of the Cleveland late medieval re-enactment group ‘Rosa Mundi’. Ian – with Carol’s assistance – will be giving a practical demonstration of how a knight is dressed from head to toe in full medieval harness (armour): “How a man schall be armyd at his ese when he schal fighte on foote”.

Philippa Langley MBE is the founder of the Looking for Richard project which led to the discovery and re-interment of Richard’s remains in 2012 and 2015. She will be speaking on the Missing Princes Project and its discoveries since 2017, uncovering the documentary evidence that Edward IV’s sons were alive during the reign of Henry VII: ‘The Princes in the Tower: Solving History's Greatest Cold Case’

The day runs from 9.30am- 4.30pm, with 90 minutes free for lunch: a quality buffet lunch is available at the church for £10. Tickets for the Study Day itself are £25 for adults and £20 for those in full-time education (or current members of the Northern Dales RIII Group). Tickets can be paid by BACS bank transfer, cheque or cash. Please contact Kim Harding on kirklandergirl@googlemail.com or on 01833-637018
