The Play's the Thing

"The Play’s the Thing" is a play-reading group which started in 2016 and has read a number of well-known and lesser-known plays including:
- Daphne du Maurier’s "Rebecca",
- Jez Butterworth’s "The Ferryman",
- Tennessee Williams’ "Period of Adjustment",
- an adaptation of Chaucer’s "Canterbury Tales",
- Oscar Wilde’s "The Importance of being Ernest", and
- Neil Simon’s "The Odd Couple".
The group convenor hosts the meetings at her house and, because of limited space and the easy availability of multiple copies of plays, the number of members is restricted to 9 or 10. Everyone has to be double jabbed and, providing Covid numbers are pretty stable, we will continue with live meetings. Otherwise it’s back to Zooming, which nowhere near as enjoyable, at least keeps the group functioning.
A short break is taken at a suitable point during reading for tea, coffee and cake.
At the end of the meeting, copies of the next play to be read are handed out by the group convenor, and a cast list is drawn up so that members can study their parts before the next meeting. Depending on the number of characters in the play, members may have to take on more than one part or share their part with another member.
