incorporating Local History

History Group monthly meetings are back. We have secured our traditional time-slot at the Boniface Centre (last Thursday of the month, starting at 10:00am) for most of these meetings.

Happy New Year to you all.

At the next meeting of the u3a History Group, we will be launching our collaborative project Our Parents’ Generation. I will kick this off with a talk based around an extraordinary memoire written by the mother of one of our members. That memoire is particularly rich in detail, but I hope that the talk will inspire some of you to think about things you could do to bring your own stories to life.

I anticipate that Our Parents’ Generation will keep the group usefully occupied for three or four months – but I stress that it’s intended to be a collaborative project. I am happy to facilitate it, but I would really appreciate lots of input from various members of the group – and it’s up to you to decide what will be included, and what shape the project will take. We might end up with a book featuring lots of different stories, or maybe a group presentation – or both?

As previously mentioned, I am standing down as the Convenor for the group – this project will be my swansong. Our call for people to help run the group in future has already brought forth some volunteers, but we still need more so that we can “spread the load”. We have suggested that we merge the group with the parallel Churches & Historic Buildings Visiting Group to make things easier (less duplication, for a start!) – that seems to have gone down well. I am happy to help with the transition, but after that I will just be an ordinary member of the group.

I look forward to seeing you at the Boniface Centre on Thursday 25th January. We start at 10:00am. £1.50 a head, to include tea or coffee on arrival.

Regards,

Tony

June
this month’s meeting of the History Group was on foot – doing a three-mile walk around Crediton with plenty of history thrown in.

This was the Three Chapels walk we planned to do last May. I was somewhat indisposed at the time, so we had to postpone it – and here we are.

The walk started and ended in the town. It was be mainly on roads and pavements, but with some sections on footpaths, which were muddy in places as we had rain over the past days. There was one substantial hill (this is Crediton!), but we took it steady – always progressing at the speed of the slowest member of the group and plenty of pauses to talk about history "and stuff".

We meet at St Lawrence Green at 10:00am, and planed to be back in the Town Square by about 12:00 noon, Thursday 29th June. There are were options for food and drink around the Square which were very welcome at that time of day.

What do we do?
When it comes to the topics we cover, we try to keep a balance between members’ interests and the availability of speakers. We’d be delighted if people could suggest other speakers – and we’re always keen to encourage members who might like to try presenting their own favourite topics.
We also run occasional research projects which come out of discussions within the group – we’re open to suggestions! We discuss these and other topics at our monthly meetings.
