Carpet Bowls 2023

Previous sessions

September meeting
9 of us played this morning, the standard is getting better each time. We do seem to be getting more competitive.

August meeting
13 of us (12 playing) enjoyed our August meeting. We actually played a few games now that we are ‘experienced players’! Only a maximum of 8 are able to play at any one time which means others sitting out but we took it in turns. Everyone seemed to be getting the gist of the game although I’m sure we’re not playing exactly to the rules but at least we had some fun. It’s just a question of delivering the wood gently and not at break neck speed as you do in tenpin bowling. Practice makes perfect as the saying goes.

July 2023
Eight of us had a happy carpet bowls session on Monday 17 July. Although not knowing too many rules our group still managed to keep a few bowls on the mat. Pauline was our ace star today as she bowled the most nearest to the jack. Well done Pauline. Who will beat her next time?

It is always fun and games and a bit of rivalry when one knocks a competitor’s bowl off the mat. As we progress onwards and upwards we shall one of these days master the art of ‘slow delivery’. I think some of us remember the times of ten pin bowling. Carpet bowls is somewhat slower. We’ll all get there in the end but considering it was only our third session we should all be proud of ourselves to what we have achieved so far.

Looking forward to our next meeting in August at the Elephant on the Green.

Wendy.

April 2023
Despite our leader being away, we had some practice and we are getting more woods on the carpet.
Our next meeting is on 19th June at 10am at the Elephant on the Green.

First meeting
A few of us enjoyed our first group meeting of playing carpet bowls at the Elephant on the Green. The game was new to us all and Paul, the owner of the cafe had laid out the equipment for us and also organised some refreshments. We all had a great time.
Just to get the feel of the bowls we had what is called a ‘roll up’ to try to ease the bowl around the centre wood to touch the jack at the far end.

Much laughter was had by all and there was occasional applause when a few bowled to hit the jack, much to their surprise,
