Intermediate walks 2023

July Walk
We are still looking for volunteers to lead the intermediate walks, the first Tuesday of the month, 4 to 5 miles. Also the short walks, the fourth Wednesday of the month, 2 to 3 miles. If you don't want to be a group leader but would be happy to occasionally lead a walk please let me know.

Today's weather forecast was for non stop rain but the rain stayed away for most of our walk. Five of us met at Brampford Speke to do a four and a half mile walk, mostly along the Exe Valley Way.

We started by walking through the churchyard, along the river where we saw two egrets, then away from the river to take a left along Green Lane, turning right to walk along the road, passing Barton Cross, Spears Cottage and Oakhay Barton.

On reaching the level crossing at Stoke Canon the plan was to go to the church to have our drinks and snacks in the churchyard there, but it began to rain so we walked along the disused railway and had coffee at the Agricultural Inn.

June walk
We started our walk with eleven walkers and were joined later on by two more who had been unable to join us at the start. We had a cool start but soon the sun broke through giving us a lovely day for walking.

We started, what turned out to be a tough four mile walk, from St Saviours car park, taking a footpath to Western Lea, through Cromwells Cutting, following the public footpath by Pitts farm through the Conservation area.

Out of the Conservation area at Moorlake Bridge we walked along the road for about half a mile before taking the public footpath to Follymoor. This turned out to be quite tough and something to be avoided in the future.

We then walked across farmland at Denbury Farm, admiring the wonderful British countryside, passing Beare Hill farm, crossing the road to take a very steep hill to join part of the Redvers Ramble walk before crossing more fields towards Yeolands.

Passing Yeolands, QE lower school, and walking along Tin Pot for a short distance we arrived at the steps which took us back to the car park and the start of our walk.

May Walks
Hello everyone, ten of us met at the Higher Road end of the Millennium path for today's walk on a warm, sunny day. Walking away from our start to Forches Cross, then on to Poundshill Cross, before turning left towards the East Lodge at Creedy Park.

Passing Creedy Lakes, to Mooracre, where three of our group decided to do the shorter route of three and a half miles, while the rest of us followed the sign to Upton Hellions, passing the Church and Mill before going through the very muddy ford and along a muddy green lane.

We crossed the road, following a Public footpath sign, across a field for about three quarters of a mile admiring the lovely English Countryside before emerging onto another road, turning left to walk down to the village of Sandford where we sat at the tables outside the Lamb.

After snacks and drinks we made our way to the Millennium Green and the millennium path, back to the start of our walk. A total of five miles.

April walk
Eleven walkers met at Steps Bridge for today's walk along the river at Dunsford Nature Reserve. The weather was kind to us, a lovely Spring day. The aim of doing the walk today was to see the wonderful display of wild daffodils. There were plenty to see as we walked alongside the river, but when we got to the meadow we were all overawed by the spectacular display.

Before too long we arrived at the Clifford Bridge end of the nature reserve where ten of us decided to attempt the steep uphill climb to the viewing point. One of our ladies gave up halfway, but the rest of us used loads of energy to get to the top to be rewarded with wonderful 360 degree views as well as more daffodils. These seemed smaller than the others we'd seen, in peak condition, some still in bud.

Back down the hill to retrace our steps to the start of the walk and our parked cars.

The walk along the river and back is four miles, whereas the additional walk up to the viewing point turned out to be five miles .

We then went to the Walled garden tea rooms at Dunsford where we sat in the garden to enjoy drinks and lunch.

March walk
Hello everyone, seven walkers met at the front of Exeter Central Station on a chilly, but dry day. We started by walking down Northernhay Street, under the Iron Bridge, into Exe Street, passing the Catacombs on our left, over Bonhay Road near the Mill on the Exe and crossing the river by the foot bridges.

Here we turned left to follow the river towards Exe Bridges, going up the slope and crossing into Cowick Street. Taking the pedestrian tunnel under the St Thomas Viaduct we stopped to admire the Pigeon Mosaic which had been created/installed in 1990. We continued down Cowick Street for a short while before turning right, through the gates into St Thomas Pleasure Grounds. On exiting the park we walked down Clarence Rd, Buller Rd, under another railway bridge then turning left into Flowerpot Lane which led us back to walking beside the river towards Exeter St David railway station.

Heading up St Davids Hill towards the Buller Statue, we took a slight diversion to Little Silver to admire the beautiful communal garden with it's crocuses and primroses (I'm told it will be lovely again quite soon when the tulips are in bloom),

Heading back to the Buller Statue we entered Bury Meadow Park directly opposite. On exiting the park we walked behind the prison, down Prison Lane, over the railway bridge, through the gate into Northernhay Gardens and back to the start of our journey.

Feb Walk
Hello everyone, 12 walkers met on what turned out to be a bright sunny winters day, perfect for walking.

Starting from the car park at Copplestone, we crossed the A377, cutting through some well kept allotments before walking on the road to Coleford, then on to Colebrooke where we took a few minutes to look around the church.

On leaving the Church we followed the sign to Yeoford for a few yards before turning to walk through the lovely hamlet of Penstone.

We stopped for drinks and snacks that we had bought with us at Penstone Glade, a community space maintained by the local residents for the Hamlet who organise a variety of events there.

Soon we were back on the road to Coleford and retraced our steps back to the car park at Copplestone. A total of four and a half miles.

Regards Ann

Jan walk
Hello everyone, there were 6 people on todays walk and though a lot of people had cancelled due to the awful weather forecast, the weather was extremely kind to us during our walk and we avoided the showers that had been predicted.

We started from the Lords Meadow leisure centre, walking past the tennis courts, across two fields until we reached the road that led us past Shobrooke Park, the plan being to walk on the road from then on to avoid muddy fields.

Crossing the A3072 we headed towards Upton Hellions, passing Merrifield Farm and reaching Lower Creedy, instead of turning towards Sandford at this point walkers wanted to go to the church at Upton Hellions and a decision was made to walk past Hellions Mill, through a quite muddy Ford, over the footbridge that crosses the River Creedy before getting back on to the road to Sandford.

Here we sat outside the Lamb for drinks and snacks before heading back to Crediton via the Millennium Green and the Millennium path. This walk was just over 5 miles.
