Friday Lunches 2021-2022

Friday 25th Nov
This was the last meal for the group for this year, it was held at the Beer Engine at Newton st Cyres, a pub we have visited before. We were not disappointed! The food was excellent and the staff all worked very hard to serve the 28 people who attended meals at the same time. A very convivial time was had by all (possibly helped by the crackers and paper hats)Thank you to all at the pub who made our day go so well.

Friday 28th October
A very busy meal was enjoyed at The Stables in Cowley just outside exeter, see photos opposite, several new members joined us to make a total of 25 people. The Staff at the pub did their normal grand job of serving us in very rapid time considering the size of the group. It was very good of the pub to step up at short notice as the place we had anticipated using had had to cancel us as they were having staffing problems and would not have been able to deal with us all at this time, we hope that next year we will be able to visit them as the food that they do is very good (advert for next year here!). Everyone had a good time with the level of conversation high while we waited for the food. The food was very good with a wide choice from the menu being experienced by the group. Once again thanks to all the Staff who looked after us so well.

Friday 30th September
Although the weather was wet and windy the welcome for our 18 intrepid pub lunchers was warm and friendly. All survived the lanes in order to attend.
We had the bonus of all being able to sit together on one long table, always conducive to a convivial atmosphere and chatter. The food was very good as expected at this well established pub and all extras to the pre ordered menu were happily and skillfully accomodated.
A very big thank you to Zoe, Rebecca and all the other staff for giving the group a great experience.

Friday 26th August
This time we re visited the Old Malt Scoop at lapford. 26 members assembled and were treated very well by all the staff at the pub and treated to a very good selection of meals, ranging from steaks to an excellent fish pie to Steak and ale pie to Fajita's and the old stand bys of Fish and chips and Ham egg and chips, see the photos on the side. The food was cooked wonderfully and only a few of us had room for Deserts. As normal there was a great deal of talking and socialising while we waited for our meals ( 26 meals all at once is quite a stretch for any pub). Everybody had a good time and much fun was had by all. Once again a very big thank you to all the staff who put up with us all.

Friday 29th July The Fishermans cot
23 members attended this meal, we took a few cancellations due to positive covid tests, Everybody enjoyed the usual mix of food and conversation see the pictures on the side. The pub is in a wonderful setting right by the river and, considering that the day was bright and sunny and the pub was crowded with diners, the service was good with everybody having a good meal. Thank you all the cooks and staff.

Friday 24th June Lamb Inn Sanford
The latest Friday pub lunch was held at the Lamb Inn. 28 people attended which just about filled the pub, the lunchers enjoyed a very mixed selection from the menu of this pub, and all seemed to be having a good time with a great deal of chatter and bonhomie being evident at all the tables. See the photos opposite.

Friday May 27
This lunch was held at the New Inn Sampford Courtney. A very high turnout of members had a very convivial time at this pub, the food was of a high standard and the staff dealt with the group and the many different meals ordered very well considering that there were 31 of us at the meal. All participants have said that they had a good time and enjoyed the food and the chatter amongst us during the course of the meal. A great thank you is due to all the staff at the New Inn.

Friday April 29
This was held at the Red Lion Broadclyst,18 souls bravely under took the expedition to Broadclyst to the Red Lion for this months friday pub lunch, the pub supplied a very good lunch to all who attended with a range of meals from Sea Bass through Burgers to Lasagne to Vegan Burgers. Special mention here to the Sea Bass with Noodles, sounds strange but is wonderful, also the mushroom starter was one of the best I have ever had. Everybody had a good time and to be honest all the food was very good. A thank you is due to Josh and all the staff at the pub.

Pub Lunch March 25th
This lunch was held at the Belluno Italian Restaurant in Newton st Cyres, It was attended by the biggest number of participants we have had at these occasions. 32 members enjoyed a good time with a range of excellent meals having been ordered in advance ( because of the fact it is a Restaurant and also the number of attendees we all had to pre order our meal choices). Everybody was well satisfied with their selections from both the fixed price and standard menu and the service and attention given by the entire staff made the occasion a pleasure for all concerned. I think that many of us will be returning to eat there again in the future.

First pub lunch of 2022
We started the year with a visit to "The London Inn" at Morchard Bishop. The meal was very well attended with 30 members turning up to sample the food. As always the pub did not disappoint, (Guidance for people who have never been here :- If you have a starter you won't have room for a sweet after the main meal!!!). All 30 of us had excellent meals and a very convivial time was (hopefully) had by all participants. We offer a heartfelt thank you very much to Sarah and the hard working staff at the pub for the excent food provided and the friendly atmosphere.

2021 Lunches

Lunches we had in 2021
November Pub Lunch at The Beer Engine Newton St Cyres
The mneal this month was held on Friday 26th November when we returned to the Beer Engine (a very popular venue). It was attended by 25 members of the group (the biggest number this year) who all had excellent meals and a very friendly and convivial time was had by all. We were joined by several new members for their first time and we will look forward to them joining us again in the new year. Considering the size of the group Will and his staff did a grand job and made it a memorable and friendly pre Christmas meal. Many Thanks to all at the Beer engine.

October Pub Lunch at the Tom Cobley, Spreyton
This was held on Friday 29th Oct, And we can confidently say that a good time was had by all 21 people attending. Thoughtful and attentive staff coped well with the group even though we were eating quite a range of options from the extensive menu. Excellent Covid precautions were in place and we were seated in a separate section of the pub. Wonderful food and and as before our biggest problem was deciding a) if we could eat a dessert and b) which of the choices on offer to have. All in all a grand and convivial lunch out. Thanks to Roger and all his excellent staff for all their care and attention. Highly recommended if you are eating out.

Update September

The pub lunches have started again!!
The first of the pub lunches for 18 months (due to the unfortunate Covid outbreak) was held at "The Stables" in Cowley on the 24th september, the eager participants had a good time. The food as always was very good, with the pies in particular proving very popular (and filling)! Great thought had to be given as to if there was room for a desert!

February 2020
The U3A pub lunch group visited the Beer Engine at Newton St Cyres on Friday 28th Feb. Twenty-three members attended and enjoyed a wonderful meal. The biggest problem encountered was choosing just what you wanted to eat from the extensive menu and specials board. Many thanks to the friendly and efficient staff who coped well with our very large group, and a good time was had by all.
