April 2013 We set off on our monthly birdwatching walk, this time we went along the Cromford Canal from Whatstandwell to Cromford Wharf.

We saw 24 birds in total with good views of male and female blackcap and nuthatch. We also heard plenty of chiffchaff and managed to spot one or two as well. It was good to see signs of spring with mallard ducklings and various wild flowers including wood anemone, wood sorrel, butterbur plus a few bluebells.

If you want to join us on our next trip at the end of May then get in touch.

March 2013 We visited Attenborough Nature Reserve on a cold, windy but dry day in March, (one of our favourite places for birding).

We saw 33 different species including good views of a Snipe. We were also lucky to see, at close quarters, Red Crested Pochard, they swam close to the bank enabling us to get a detailed look at their wonderful plumage.

Keep a look out for the Swallows arriving, the group usually see them during our April outing, so let's hope we'll be lucky on our next trip and then we'll know that summer is on the way.

February We had a lovely walk down Wyver Lane, Belper. Our target bird was a Bittern but as they are rather elusive we knew we would have to be extremely lucky to see one.Well luck must have been on our side, as we had a superb view of one walking along the edge of the reed-bed, this bird is so well camouflaged that it just 'melts' into the reeds and it is very difficult to spot. We also had close views of a small flock of waxwings eating the berries in a tree at the side of the lane. What a day, two brilliant birds and we didn't even have to travel out of Belper!
