The U3A (Originally the "University of the Third Age)

The U3A is an international self-help learning organisation for "3rd Agers". In the UK the national umbrella organization, The Third Age Trust ("TAT") is a company limited by guarantee with charitable status. Harlow U3A is an operationally independent affiliate of TAT and from April 2022 operates as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). All our Trustees and others who organise and run our activities do so on a voluntary basis, a core U3A principle.
U3A members are typically retired or semi-retired from paid employment and wish to share their skills, interests and experience with others. Harlow U3A provides many opportunities to try new hobbies and activities, to socialize, and join others supporting the community in volunteer roles.

Check the "Volunteer" page for local volunteering opportunities.

Everyone who is on the committee, runs one of the groups or helps at monthly meetings is a volunteer. Getting involved is a great way to make new friends, be socially active, to know what is happening within the U3A and engage with the wider community.

Find more about the history and ethos of the U3A on the National Organization's website, accessed via the "U3A" Page of this website, where you can also sign up for the monthly 'National U3A Newsletter'.

HARLOW U3A

Harlow and Surrounding Areas U3A was formed in January 2008 and dissolved in April 2022, when its assets were transferred to Harlow U3A CIO. We have about 650 paid up members and 60 interest groups. Check the Groups Page for a flavour and variety of interests/activities and find more details on groups that interest you. Contact information and meeting times of current groups are available via the Groups Page links and also in the Newsletter.

The member-run groups are at the heart of the U3A. Every encouragement is given to serve more interests and start new groups. Interest group members manage their own arrangements and expenses, subject to general guidelines and rules on cash handling.

There is a monthly general meeting, usually the 4th Monday of the month, at Paringdon Sports Club, Paringdon Road, Great Parndon, Harlow, CM19 4QT from 10.00 to 12.30am. Actual meeting dates on the Meetings Page.
