Past Outings

Monday 10th July 2023 - saw a visit to the Yorkshire Lavender & Kirkham Priory. 23 of our members enjoyed a day out visiting Yorkshire Lavender & Kirkham Priory.
Our coach left our pick up points promptly and after an hour’s journey we arrived at Yorkshire Lavender at Terrington, York for 11.30a.m.
Set in 60 acres and with amazing views we experienced the lavender maze, the Mediterranean garden and the wildflower meadow - plus more!
Some members took advantage of the picnic area whilst others enjoyed lunch at the Tea Room - the quiche was scrummy!
The plant nursery had a variety of plants for sale, not just lavender and there was also a lovely gift shop.

Our second stop was a very short drive away to Kirkham Priory and although we experienced a rain shower (of course, it is an English summer) we were given a very interesting talk by the guide about the history of this now ruined Priory, which was built in the 1120’s and fell into disrepair as a result of the reformation during Henry VIII’s reign. It was fascinating to learn of the visit there by Winston Churchill during the second world war when the site was used as a testing site for the D Day Landings in 1944.
Our lovely coach driver Ian, drove us back to Wakefield and our first drop off point by 4:30p.m.
Thank you to all the members who attended, we hope you enjoyed it and hope to see you at our next outing on Tuesday 5 September to the National MemorialYorks Arboretum in Staffordshire…….
