Wakefield & District

A bit about us & boring stuff like costs

Wakefield & District u3a (Charity number 1002486) was founded in 1983 and is part of a nationwide Charity. The u3a movement provides the opportunity for those no longer in work to come together and have fun pursuing their interests, in a friendly and informal environment. We are a local, friendly organisation, run by members, for its members, and we would love you to join us.

Wakefield & District u3a currently has a membership of more than 400 people living in all areas of our district. Groups take place in many different venues to suit the activity or the size of the group. Some groups take place in the homes of members and/or leaders, whilst others, eg. walking, bird watching, have no need of a venue but agree meeting points. Groups needing specific facilities meet in village halls, sports clubs or community centres situated throughout our area. Where possible we try to arrange venues accessible by public transport and the majority of our activities take place during the daytime.

Our monthly Newsletter keeps everyone informed of other activities, for example the monthly Coffee Mornings featuring varied and interesting speakers, coach outings and other social events throughout the year.

Annual u3a membership currently costs £12, which entitles a member to join as many of our group activities as they wish - depending upon availability. If you are a member of another u3a, then the membership fee is reduced to £8. Some groups may require an additional contribution towards the rental of premises, this currently stands at £12 per ten week term (specific groups will state any differences to this norm).

HOW TO JOIN: Currently, there are 3 really easy ways that you can join Wakefield & District u3a:

1) Just come along to one of our monthly coffee mornings, details of which can be found on the 'Events' tab. There is no charge for your first visit and our meet & greet members will be happy to help you with any questions you may have. Membership forms are available for you to complete at the door should you wish to join.

2) Go along to a Group meeting (see the Groups tab above) and speak to the Group Leader who will provide you with the necessary forms in the same way as if you had attended a coffee morning.

3) Go along to the Membership Day which, this year, ie. 2023, is being held in The Ridings, Wakefield Town Centre, on 7th September.
