Lichen on a painted steel girder

This is a lichen on a painted steel girder perhaps reminiscent of volcanic islands in a smooth ocean? 'Volcanic' because of the 'black sand coastline', which is actually the extending fungal hyphae forming the margin of the lichen.
Location: Manor Valley.
