The Burnhams

We had quite a large group of 15 on the walk this month. A lovely day for walking dry and not too hot. We started in Burnham Market and walked along a lane with very large new houses being built and then walked at the edge of a field, crossed the road into Burnham Norton which is a hamlet as it does not have a church. We then took a path between reed beds with drainage channels heading towards the coast. Daisy ran into a drainage channel which was a lot deeper than expected and had to be pulled out! We then joined the coast path and heading towards Burnham Overy Staithe; which you come quite close to but the River Burn is between the path and the village so you walk inland until you can cross the river at a footbridge. We had a lovely view of the windmill and walked along the road to The Hero for a much needed lunch and drink. We then walked down to the harbour and continued along the coast path before turning inland along a grassy path. We walked along a lane, across fields coming out at Burnham Overy Town. We viewed the church of St Clement’s and the nail post on the tiny village green. We then turned towards Burnham Market passing a windmill and mill until we got to Friars Lane where we walked along to the ruins of a friary. We took footpaths back to Burnham Market.
