Tadcaster & Villages

The Benefits of Being a Member of u3a

Below are testimonies from members of u3a:

"When I came to live in Tadcaster I didn't know anyone. My main reason was to be nearer my family, who lived in York. This has been a blessing especially during the coronavirus epidemic, as I was self-isolation due to age restrictions. However, I knew from day one that I would need to organise my own social life.

I had been a u3a member previously and, over a period time with group involvement, I learnt to read music, play guitar, use a compute and participate in ballroom dance classes and went along to monthly 'Speaker' meetings.

Meeting people to share pastimes, hobbies, interests etc who are no longer in full-time employment, but want to get the most our of their days doing the things they enjoy either by helping others develop skills or learning something new through shared experiences, gives retirement some structure to day to day routines.

Joining the inaugural committee of Tadcaster & Villages u3a has given me plenty of involvement, particularly on Zoom meetings. I am pleased to have the company of so many people who I now consider to be friends.

Throughout lockdown there's been connection by a WhatsApp group, started as 'Quizzers' but also became a supportive group concerned for each other. It's what you make of it yourself, to be involved or not - I know what I would choose!

I have been happy walking out with individuals, minding government restrictions, but now group activities are resuming and things can only get better."

"It was the first members' meeting I'd been able to attend since I joined. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I've also been to the Walking and Art groups and next week I'm joining the Nature group.

I would recommend to anyone thinking of joining the u3a that they come along or get in touch. It's a friendly and welcoming group."
