Walk Archive 2023

February 28th
Oakham Canal (4 miles)
Ros led 15 of us from the Rutland Garden Village Centre at Ashwell down the Oakham Canal, around Oakham and then back for an easy walk to get us back into the swing of things in 2023. Some change in the route was necessary as volunteers were improving the walkways. The weather was a bit grey and drizzly but spirits were high. Lunch was at the cosy Radish restaurant.

March 14th
Exton to Fort Henry (5.2 miles)
18 of us set off on this nice walk from the pretty village of Exton. (Judy & Ted). The weather was amazingly sunny, just clouding over as we returned to Exton. Lovely rural views and of Fort Henry by the lake. It blew the cobwebs away before a good lunch at Barnsdale cafe.

March 28th
Easton on the Hill to Stamford
This walk had to be cancelled due to the terrible rain which was forecast and did indeed arrive. However, 12 of us went to the pub anyway and had a good natter and lunch so the day was not totally lost!

April 11th
Harringworth (4.5 miles)
12 did this new walk led by Jean, starting and finishing at a disused railway track south of Harringworth. Nice views of the Welland valley. Some woodland, around a lake, some farm tracks and fields. Several enjoyed the food at the Marquess of Exeter in Lyddington afterwards.

April 25th
Gumley to Foxton Locks (5.6 miles)
Patrick led this pretty walk in lovely spring sunshine - with a new start through Gumley churchyard (to avoid some of the boggier and steeper sections) down to the Canal and along the towpath to Foxton Locks. The steep climb back into Gumley seems to get steeper every time!! Very good food was enjoyed at The Bell pub.

May 9th
Oakham
Roy & Carol (4.1 miles)
This walk began with a steep climb up Brooke Hill. With views over Oakham and Rutland Water the descent took us over the railway line and then to Egleton village, past the church and then back to Oakham.

May 23rd
Belmesthorpe and Ryhall (5 miles)
Chris & Dennis
This walk took us around the countryside of Ryhall with lovely views across the Rutland countryside. The landlady at The Bluebell Inn, very kindly opened specially for us!

June 13th
Hallaton (4.5 miles)
Bryan
Several stiles but nothing too difficult or hig, this walk undulated around the fields of Hallaton and Horninghold with some friendly sheep. The sun shone and we sat outside at The Fox for a very pleasant lunch. Bryan took some of the walkers to the Hallaton Museum for those who were interested after lunch.

June 27th
Somerby (4.4 miles)
Margaret & David
This walk took us down Newbold Lane, across fields to Owston, and back along the Leicestershire Round to Somerby. Refreshments at the Stilton Dish were good as usual.

July 11th
Hungarton (4.7 miles)
Ros & Tessa
This walk was through the lovely countryside around Hungarton and Cold Newton along some very quiet country lanes, through Quenby Hall parkland, with grass and arable fields. Lunch was at the very friendly Ashby Arms in Hungarton.

July 25th
Harringworth (4.5 miles)
James
The trek uphill at the start of walk was rather overgrown in places. Tessa wielded her shears though shorts wearers had been warned! Glorious views over Harringworth and the viaduct. The route descended to Turtle Bridge and along the Welland back to Harringworth.
Refreshments at the Marquis of Exeter at Lyddington were very good!

August 8th
Duddington to Fineshade Woods (4.5 miles)
Dennis & Sally
The rain held off for this lovely gentle summer walk. We stopped half way at Top Lodge. The lunch at the Royal Oak was excellent as usual.

August 22nd
Elton to Fotheringhay (5.5 miles)
Patrick
A very pleasant walk, rather warm but with a refreshing breeze, from Elton to the castle mound at Fotheringhay to enjoy the view! The Black Horse at Elton was a first for the group and was reported to be excellent.

September 12th
Walk cancelled due to heavy rain

September 26th
Launde Abbey (5.5 miles)
Mike
Mainly track and minor roads with no stiles. Luncha t the lovely Launde Abbey cafe.

October 10th
Lyndon to Wing (5 miles)
Claire
A pleasant easy circular walk of about 2hrs. Minor roads and tracks in fields. A bit hilly in places but not too steep. No stiles. Nice views of the valley and of Lyndon Hall. Interesting maze at Wing. Refreshments at Pick's Barn - nice food but slow!

Walk cancelled due to heavy rain

November 14th
Edith Weston & Rutland Water (5.7 miles)

Nice autumnal walk - mostly tracks, paths, quiet lanes with a couple of large grassy fields partly alongside Rutland Water and views across to it. No hills but a bit longer than our usual walks. Lunch at the Wheatsheaf

November 28th (5 miles)
Helpston
Ros & Judy
A new walk on a lovely sunny day. Mostly flat tracks, paths, fields, and quiet lanes around the pretty village of Helpston (birthplace of John Clare, 12 Woodgate, next to the pub) and Ashton. Easy walking apart from one newly ploughed field. Food at the Bluebell Inn.

December 12th
Christmas Lunch at the Lake Isle Restaurant, Uppingham
