DRAMA GROUP OUTING

Yesterday Sunday the 22nd August at 2 p.m. we, the Drama Group went to The Lowry in Salford to watch our first play since before the first Lockdown. The play was called ‘The play that goes wrong’ acted by Olivier award winners, The Mischief Makers Group of professional actors. There was no social distancing, but everyone was required to wear masks, which was a challenge because laughing hysterically made the masks quite damp.

The play was about a murder in a Manor House, or was it? Mayhem and frolics by a fit and acrobatic cast left us exhausted. The play started by a request from someone on the balcony to search for a lost dog, which the audience enthusiastically joined in with. The dog was never found, because an actor appeared in the second half carrying an empty collar and lead, Ahh!!

Before it started, back-stage workers tried to mend broken doors and scenery. Gradually during the play, things fell off walls, doors jammed, and a platform with Actors on fell (no-one was hurt). Actors were dragged through the now demolished window and miraculously reappeared inside the Grandfather Clock. The lift exploded on several occasions, catapulting actors across the stage. Lines were forgotten and long silences ensued. Eventually, we found out the name of the murderer, which we are sworn to secrecy not to reveal. As this happened all the scenery fell apart, as did we with exhaustion from laughing. We thought that our productions were bad at times, but after seeing this play, we ain’t too bad. If you love slapstick, do try to see this company, who have several plays in their repertoire. It was delightful to get on a tram, walk about Media City and see a very special play, it buoyed up our mood considerably. We look forward to the next visit to the theatre, look out on the website for our next play.
