|Wed Mar 30th 2022||Ingatestone Hall, Essex and Kelvedon Nuclear Bunker |
On sale: January/February 2022
The Hall stands in open countryside, one mile from the village of Ingatestone and substantially retains it original Tudor form and appearance with its mullioned windows, high chimneys, crow-step gables and oak panelled rooms and is surrounded by ten acres of enclosed gardens comprising extensive lawns, walled garden and stew pond. Tours of the house and grounds, led by our experienced guides, takes about an hour and a half.
Lunch available at THE EAGLE, Kelvedon Hatch. On booking we will give you a menu to pre-order to save time on the day of the trip. Drinks and lunch bills will be payable individually on the day.
Kelvedon Nuclear Bunker
Step inside the door of this rural bungalow nesting in the Essex countryside and discover the twilight world of the government cold war. Behind the blast screens that protect this bungalow is the entrance to an amazing labyrinth of rooms built into a hillside, encased in 10ft thick reinforced concrete and 100ft underground. This is where devolved central government and military commanders would have run the region had the UK been attacked and nuclear war broken out.
But you now have the chance to see the three phases of the Bunker's life. From its role with the RAF where the overall tactical controller would react to the nuclear attack from Britain's enemies, through to its role as Regional Government HQ when there could have been up to 600 personnel, possibly including the Prime Minister, organising the survival of the civilian population in the aftermath of the nuclear war.
The tour is by audio guide and takes around an hour and a half. NOTE: there are steps involved and uneven sloping paths (120 yds) to and from the car park which requires suitable footwear.
