Chiswell Green

Members Area

Entry to our Christmas meeting is by ticket only and we ask that you do not arrive before 09.30 please. This will give the Committee time to set up the Sports Hall. As usual there will be Refreshments, Raffle (12 Days of Christmas) and a Quiz. (No books, membership table etc.)

You should have received an email from us regarding your safety when shopping online for Christmas presents, and of course at other times.

The Book Stall ladies (Stephanie and Diane) would welcome a few more books/jigsaws/DVDs in JANUARY 2022, but please do not bring more than 4-6 of either, as we have very little storage available to us at Greenwood Park.

Maureen collected all the milk bottle tops and will be stopping the collection of these until a local charity can be found who will take them for recycling.

Used stamps - if you have been saving your used stamps during lockdown, these were collected last Thursday. Mary has also asked for you to continue saving, especially around Christmas time. She donates these to the Royal National Institute for the Blind. Thank you.
Those of us who are already members of a u3a can take advantage of the opportunities in normal times it presents to participate in a broad range of activities, or just to enjoy the camaraderie between members which certainly exists in Chiswell Green u3a (CGu3a).

However, this is not always apparent to those outside the u3a who may not be aware of what it offers or even know of its existence. In some cases, a misunderstanding exists that u3a it is not appropriate to people entering retirement or semi retirement in their fifties or early sixties. With this resulting in u3a membership being at the higher end of the age profile, the u3a at national level embarked on a process of rebranding.

The title University of the Third Age may have been particularly confusing so it was dropped in favour of simply using u3a. However a further review has led to a rebranding with the adoption of a more informal style as u3a together with a concept of ‘Learn, Laugh and Live’ to demonstrate the key elements of a vibrant organisation.
Greenwood Park Community Centre & the Parish Centre are now open.
Any updates on the use of the halls within the Centre will be posted on their website & Greenwood Park Community Centre Facebook page.

2021/2022 CG MEMBERSHIP ONLY £9.00 TO PAY (for existing members ONLY) £18 for new members.
2021/2022 CG u3a membership cards will be available at our monthly meetings.
Please take a look at the Herts Network of u3a's website - there is lots of information/ideas and links to various activities. You will find the link to this on our Welcome page.
Ann Traynor, Interest Groups Co-ordinator will update our main Groups page as soon as she is able to.

We would love to hear from members as to how they are keeping themselves busy and will be happy to pass on your suggestions/ideas to others. Contact either Ann or myself (Pauline Matthews) via the bird icon on this page to share your ideas with us please.

Have you checked out the National u3a website. There are so many ideas on what other U3A's and their members have been doing to keep themselves occupied - quizzes, videos, maths challenges, and lots of updates.

Our Tai Chi group is actively looking for more members. Flower Arranging and Papercrafts (1) also have a few spaces available. If you are interested in any of these groups, take a look at their group page under the Groups heading for contact details etc.

Art, Zumba Gold, Gardening, Keep Fit, Walking all need new Group Organisers. Contact Ann Traynor or Pam Whitfield via this website if you are able to help, maybe you would like to share an Organiser role with another CG member.

Unfortunately, several of our groups have now 'disbanded'. These are: Spanish (Beginners), Canasta, Chair Exercise, Creative Writing, Family History 1, Jewellery Making, Joy of Film and Wish You Were Here. If you would like to start up any of these groups (or others), please contact Pam Whitfield, who is looking after NEW Interest Groups, via this website. Thank you

You can catch up with what our Photography groups are doing on their very own website and there are lots of photos on a variety of themes that have been taken over the years.

If you are trying something completely new? Please tell us about it via this website, or even pen a newsletter article and send it to me!
Are you registered with the University of the Third Age Trust website? They are emailing to those U3A members who are registered a 'Newsletter Express' with lots of information, hints and tips to help us all through these challenging times. If you're not, there is still lot of information on their website BUT it is easy to register. Go to the University of the Third Age website. At the very bottom of the page (in tiny letters!!) is "Create an Account". Fill in your details and register.
Chiswell Green u3a has been very successful and has grown considerably since it started in 2014. I'm sure you will agree that the committee and our Interest Group Organisers have done us all proud. We certainly have a great reputation among the other local u3s.
In order to keep things moving forward and keep the fresh, friendly feel we welcome your suggestions for groups, trips or speakers. Many of us belong to other clubs and so hear different speakers or go on visits. Don't keep it to yourself, TELL US!!!
To give us your suggestions you can either click on the 'Bird' icon on this page to send an email to a Committee member via the Contacts page on this website.

We all look forward to hearing from you.
